about Vlambeer

Vlambeer is a Dutch independent game studio made up of Rami Ismail and Jan Willem Nijman, bringing back arcade games since 1774.

Nuclear Throne is Vlambeers latest action roguelike-like about mutants that spend their workdays trying to fight for the throne in a post-apocalyptic world. The radioactive waste in the world allows mutants to get ahead by mutating new limbs on the fly and the abundant availability of powerful weaponry make the quest to become ruler of the Wasteland one frought with peril. All of this is really just an excuse for us to make a fun action game.

The idea is to take what we’ve learned in the past few years and really explore that to the fullest of our abilities. Our exploration of arcade gameplay has lead to the release of games like Super Crate Box, LUFTRAUSERS and Ridiculous Fishing, but also weird experiments like Yeti Hunter, KARATE and GUN GODZ. We’ve learned a lot about how to create gameplay that feels nice, and we’ve learned invaluable lessons about how to weave a strong fiction into a game, creating smooth interfaces and many other things. Nuclear Throne is something we couldn’t have made without the things we’ve made the past few years. It’s full of tributes to our other games, but in a way it’s really our own little tribute to this thing that is Vlambeer.
