about Nyamakop

Nyamakop is a new South African games studio founded by award winning game developer Cukia Kimani and A MAZE. / Johannesburg program manager, Ben Myres.

Nyamakop started in 2015, when Ben and Cukia were doing their honors degree in Game Design at Wits University. We presented our final year project game to the external examiner, Judd Simantov - an ex-Naughty Dog lead who worked on Uncharted and The Last of Us. Judd was impressed by our project - just a prototype then, and suggested we make it into a full game. This game was Semblance. We worked on it part-time during university and full-time for some of 2016.

We’ve worked with several collaborators over this time and visited several international games festivals such as A MAZE, Radius and Games for Change with some of our games and prototypes. We’re currently focusing on Semblance, working on making it a full game.

Nyamakop is a portmanteau word of truly African proportions. ‘Nyama’ means ‘meat’ in Kiswahili and ‘kop’ means ‘head’ in Afrikaans. Together, it means: ‘meathead’. We like to say we think with our hearts - which is where the meat comes into it.

Semblance is a puzzle platformer where your character and the world it inhabits is made of playdough. Squish, squash and deform your character and the world to solve puzzles in this soft, bouncy world, while exploring gorgeous abstracted vistas.

The world of our character, Squish, is usually entirely soft - but an infestation of hard material is spreading, feeding off the playdough world to survive. A guardian of the world gives it’s own life to give life to a very piece of the world - creating Squish. Squish must collect the very essences of their world to bring the soft world back to life.
